Abstract

Introduction: energy drinks (ED) are popular among university students to combat fatigue and stress. However, its regular consumption can have negative health effects, such as insomnia and cardiovascular problems, due to its high caffeine and sugar content.

Objective: determine the impact of ED consumption on the sleep quality of university students and its possible adverse health effects associated with the ingredients that compose them.

Method: the compilation of information on the ED was carried out. In addition, a systematic review of articles from the most up-to-date national and international literature on BE and its possible effects on health in university students was carried out. Articles from 2019 to 2024 were identified in various search engines such as PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect Y SciELO.

Results: energy drinks had a high content of sugars, caffeine and taurine, in addition to other components such as vitamins. BE consumption is related to health effects such as causing insomnia, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, kidney and neurological conditions.

Conclusion: BE consumption among university students is related to health problems, such as heart, kidney, gastrointestinal, and neurological conditions, among others. Active components such as caffeine, taurine and sugar contribute to these adverse effects. Despite knowledge of the risks, academic pressure drives its consumption, highlighting the need for educational interventions to reduce it.
